Design Allowable Database for Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion Now Available

CalRAM of Camarillo California, is very pleased to announce the titanium 6 Aluminum – 4 Vanadium “B” basis design allowable database is now available to members of America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, through the Digital Storefront.

Executing a purchase contract from Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS), CalRAM produced over 1200 test specimens used to create the comprehensive material database.  Each test specimen build cycle was performed with the oversight of NGAS engineering to ensure data pedigree.

The test specimens were produced with electron beam powder bed fusion (ePBF) under CalRAM’s temperature and humidity controlled environment with great care taken to prevent contamination.  Using CalRAM’s in house powder rheology and oxygen testing capability, each of the 10 precursor powder lots were carefully controlled prior to all coupon builds.

Shane Collins, Director of Additive Manufacturing Programs, states “the use of ePBF for safety critical applications has been limited to date due to a lack of design allowables.  We applaud the foresight of America Makes to fund this project that will help domestic manufacturing and create jobs ”.

The final report available at the America Makes Storefront, searchable under project 4033, includes mechanical property data e.g. tension, compression, shear and bearing strength.
